What are Plug Valves?

Plug valves are one of the oldest types of valves used to shut-off the flow of liquids, steam and gases in piping systems.

Construction and function:

Similar to ball valves, plug valves consist of a housing with an internal shut-off body that is opened or closed by turning it 90 degrees. However, the plug has a conical or cylindrical shape and is completely enclosed by the body.

The plug is pressed against the body under pressure. Thanks to the precise fit and the constant sealant film between the housing and the shut-off body, foreign objects are prevented from penetrating between the sealing surfaces, and damage and possible leaks are safely and reliably ruled out. Plug valves are free of dead space in both positions, open and closed, which favors their use with solids-containing, abrasive and crystalline media.

The passage in the plug is normally rectangular and either fully corresponding to the pipe cross-section or reduced. The reduced passage is generally one nominal diameter smaller than the connection cross-section. The rectangular passage has smaller external dimensions and is less expensive. For special applications, plug valves are also available with a full round passage.

There are soft-seated and metal-seated plug valves. We at Kähler Armaturen have specialized in the version of the metal-seated plug valves.

Advantages:

Plug valves are extremely robust and reliable, even in critical applications. In addition to very good flow values and absolute tightness, their simple and compact design makes them user-friendly to handle, easy to maintain and repair and they take up little space, even with large nominal diameters. They are also characterized by their high resistance to wear and corrosion.

The versions with full round passages are recommended when pigging is necessary and are particularly suitable for highly erosive flow media or those that tend to clog in cross-sectional constrictions.

A major advantage of the metal-sealing version is that it can be resealed. If leaks occur, they can be easily repaired by simply pressing in sealant while the valve is still installed. This unique feature among the various types of valves significantly extends the service life of plug valves.
